If you’re planning to become a licensed Security Guard in Ontario, you may notice some new terminology when registering for your required First Aid training.
Don’t worry—the requirements for your licence haven’t changed. Only the course names are being updated.
Here’s what you need to know.
Why are the First Aid course names changing?
The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is introducing updated names for approved First Aid courses.
Going forward:
- Emergency First Aid will be called Basic First Aid
- Standard First Aid will be called Intermediate First Aid
The purpose of the change is to standardize course naming. The training itself has not changed.
Do I still need First Aid to become a licensed Security Guard?
Yes.
Anyone applying for an Ontario Security Guard Licence must still complete an approved First Aid course as part of the licensing process.
The requirement hasn’t changed—only the name of the course.
Has the training changed?
No. While you’ll start seeing the new course names when registering, the certification, course content, and licensing requirements remain the same.
If you previously completed Emergency First Aid, your certification doesn’t suddenly become invalid because the name has changed.
Which course should I register for?
If you’re starting your Security Guard training now, you’ll likely see Basic First Aid listed instead of Emergency First Aid.
If you’re unsure which course you need, don’t hesitate to ask before registering. Choosing the correct course from the start can save time and avoid unnecessary confusion.

Will this affect my licence application?
