The answer is anyone working in an environment where heights are involved or falls can occur.
Do security guards need Fall Arrest Protection Training?
According to the US Department of Labor, falls account for 8% of all work-related trauma injuries leading to death. If you are working in an environment where there is potential for fall related injuries then Fall Arrest Protection training can be the difference between life and death. This course is also required by many industries in order to comply with Occupational Health and Safety regulations in Canada.
Security guards are often deployed to guard the following industries which require some level of fall protection:
- Construction sites
- Warehouses and Manufacturing sites
- Industrial
- Retail
- Airline
- Hospitality
Having proper Fall Arrest Protection gives you the necessary tools to keep yourself and other workers safe. Some employers require Fall Arrest Protection training in addition to your Ontario security guard license for security work.
When is Fall Arrest Protection online training necessary?
Fall Arrest Protection Training is used:
- To stop a worker safely after a fall has occurred
- For employees working at a height of 3 metres or more (required by law)

NOTE: Ontario Fall Arrest Training Standards changed in April, 2015 stating that Fall Arrest Protection Training is to take place in a classroom setting by a certified provider, allowing a two-year implementation period for workers to receive their training.
Though online certificates are still accepted by some employers, additional hands-on training may be required. As Covid-19 has affected in person training in many areas, online training may still be necessary in the interim. Please check with the Ministry of Labour for up-to-date health and safety training requirements.
