How Do I Become A Private Investigator In Ontario

Did you know that according to the latest Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General’s Private Security and Investigative Services Branch’s 2022—2023 Annual Report, there were 2329 Private Investigator licenses issued in 2022-2023.

The regions with the highest employment rate were:

  • Toronto: 54%
  • Ottawa: 14%
  • Hamilton-Niagara: 7%

According to available labour market information, the median income for security guards, private investigators and related security service occupations in Ontario is $42,800.  Keep in mind that Private Investigators enjoy a higher average income versus Security Guards.

To work as a private investigator in Ontario you must have a valid license issued by the Ministry of the Solicitor General. The Ministry is responsible for regulating the private investigation industry, which is governed by the Ontario Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005.
